"the last time i heard hip hop that sounded this good - beats, flows, and all - was when that M1 platoon: the invasion dropped. and maybe it’s because members from the platoon were involved in the project, but regardless, consider this an honorary blast off mixtape, except light years ahead of anything coming out soon.
this is a guy who sounds like nothing i’ve heard out of DC before - a step in a completely different direction. g5 aka murakami jr., paints a vivid picture of his hazy, day-to-day life. his second LP brings it back to the sweltering summer of 1988, presumably when a young clive first inhaled that city air and molded into the breezy infatuated, swag obsessed, tree smoking, rhyme slinging creature he is today. the introspective, thought provoking banter is balanced appropriately by the boasting, bragging, luccini type swag that most uptown roamers are born to preach about. i don’t think i’m alone when i say that the album evokes the charisma and flashes of brilliance similar to wu tang, circa ‘93 at times. the entire experience is one trippy daydream spent strolling along clive’s refreshingly imaginative mind.
beatmakers fundamental, mickey bizz, choc, and sinima lend a helping hand to g5 for the gritty and insanely out of this world production, but the majority is handled by dc’s own arafat yates, an m1 affiliate and 9th wonder protégé."2. Summa of 88
